What Council Clarity is

Council Clarity is a civic engagement platform that helps residents understand what their local council is doing, follow issues that matter to them, and message their councillors publicly. We believe transparency makes local democracy work better.

What data we collect

When you create an account, we collect:

  • Your name — so councillors know who is writing to them
  • Your email address — for account login and notifications
  • Your postcode (optional) — to match you to your ward
  • Your ward (optional) — to show you relevant councillors and decisions

When you use Council Clarity, we also store:

  • Messages you send to councillors — these become public threads
  • Topics and threads you follow — to send you relevant updates
  • Your notification preferences — which emails you want to receive

Why we collect it

We use your data to:

  • Send your messages to councillors via email
  • Show you decisions and issues relevant to your ward
  • Send you notifications when councillors reply to threads you follow
  • Send you a weekly digest of council activity (if you opt in)

We do not sell your data. We do not use it for advertising. We do not share it with third parties except the service providers listed below.

Public messages

When you message a councillor through Council Clarity, your message becomes a public thread. This is by design — public accountability is the core purpose of the platform. Your name is shown on the thread. Other residents can follow the thread and see the councillor's response (or lack of one).

If you do not want your message to be public, do not use Council Clarity to send it. You can always email your councillor directly instead.

How we store and process your data

We use the following services:

  • Supabase — database and authentication. Your data is stored in Supabase's EU data centres.
  • Resend — email delivery. Used to send messages to councillors and notifications to you.
  • Vercel — web hosting. The Council Clarity website runs on Vercel's edge network.

All data is stored and processed within the UK and EU.

Cookies

We use essential cookies for authentication (keeping you signed in). We do not use tracking cookies, analytics cookies, or advertising cookies.

Your rights

You can:

  • Update your profile information at any time from your profile page
  • Change your notification preferences at any time
  • Request a copy of all data we hold about you
  • Request deletion of your account and all associated data

To request data access or deletion, email hello@councilclarity.com. We will respond within 30 days.
